This week we visit: Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is nestled cozily between two very safe Central European countries – Switzerland and Austria. Both of these countries rank very high when it comes to traveler safety and quality of life. Liechtenstein is the same and it is generally considered one of the safest tourist destinations in the world.
That being said, Liechtenstein is part of the Schengen area, meaning that people coming from other parts of the European Union do not have to pass any security to get in the country. Because of this, there is always a remote possibility of terrorist entering the country. In reality, this is highly, highly unlikely.
Liechtenstein is not infamous for violent crimes. In fact, its violent crimes numbers are among the lowest in Europe, let alone compared to the United States. On the other hand, property crimes and petty crimes are not exactly that uncommon. This is especially true for areas that are known tourist-magnets. You should always be aware of where you valuables are, including your passport. Trains (especially overnight trains) are sometimes targeted by thieves who often work in pairs and who might be out for your valuables.
In case you plan on engaging in any activities involving Liechtenstein’s mountains, it would be a good idea to take out special insurance. Avalanches and other types of accidents can occur at any time of the year and unless you have insurance, you will need to pay for the rescue operations yourself. It goes without saying that these cost a lot.
