This week we visit: Lithuania
Lithuania is generally considered a rather safe country without too much crime. That being said, violent crimes that sometimes involve tourists have happened in the past. The personal safety situation is like those you would find in a major city in the U.S.
Thefts and pickpocketing are the most common forms of crime that will affect tourists visiting Lithuania, especially in crowded areas and those that are frequented by tourists. In addition to this, thefts of belongings from cars are quite common and it is a good idea to take everything with oneself when leaving your vehicle.
Walking alone after dark is dissuaded in some parts of the country, most notably Užupis and Old Town and neighborhoods in Vilnius. Since credit card fraud is also known to happen in Lithuania, it is best to be careful when withdrawing cash from ATMs.
If you encounter inebriated individuals, especially after dark, it is best to avoid any confrontation. Some racially motivated harassment has been known to happen in Lithuania, as well as harassment towards LGBT people.
