This week we visit: Lithuania
Lithuania is rarely a country you hear about when people list their favorite tourist destinations. It is one of the three countries in the north of Europe that are together called Baltic countries and if you decide to visit it, you will find out that this is one amazing part of the world.
Lithuania boasts quite a few cities and towns, all of which are historic thanks to the country’s tumultuous and long history. At one point, Lithuania was the largest country in the world and the medieval times were quite eventful for Lithuania. Cities like Vilnius, Kaunas and Siauliai all testify to this rich history and the importance Lithuania had in European history.
If you really want to experience Lithuanian history, you have to visit Kernave, a locale where the medieval capital of Grand Duchy Lithuania once stood. These were the golden years of Lithuania and the historic site is very well maintained. The Hill of Crosses is much younger as a tourist destination, with the first cross being erected there after 1831, but it is still one of the most fascinating places in the world. It is an entire hill which is covered in crosses that people themselves built or brought there.
Lithuania also features 5 different national parks, all incredibly beautiful and worthy of your visit. For instance, there is the Aukstaitija National Park, the first of its kind in Lithuania and featuring some of the most beautiful nature in this part of the world. Kursiy Nerija National Park was established to protect the Curonian Spit and the Curonian Lagoon, a very unique and special part of Lithuania that you should definitely see.
