This week we visit: Latvia

One of the three Baltic states, Latvia remains a hidden gem for most travelers. Though the country is unjustly under the radar, it is the perfect destination for nature explorers and culture buffs.

Here are top 3 things everyone should see in Latvia:

1. Gauja National Park

The largest national park in Latvia, Gauja National Park was established to protect the ancient Gauja River valley and surrounding areas. Almost one third of the country’s natural preserves and more than 500 historical and cultural monuments are located here – hill forts, stone castles, churches, watermills and windmills, as well as other archaeological, architectural and artistic attractions.

People looking for some peace and quiet should definitely check out the Ligatne nature trails, while those interested in old times should visit a marvelous settlement of ancient Latgalians at Āraišu Lake Castle.

2. Old Town Cēsis

One of the prettiest towns in the country, Old Town Cēsis is famous for the medieval ruins of Cēsis castle that date to the 16th century, as well as for the Cēsis Museum of History and Art, one of the oldest museums in Latvia. The town also boasts the local brewery, one of the oldest in the Baltics.

3. Old Town Riga

Located in the center of Riga on the right bank of the Daugava, Old Town features remarkable 13th-18th century fortifications where amazing monuments of architecture have been preserved.

Some of the most fascinating things you can see in Old Town include the 13th century Riga Dome Cathedral, Gothic style St. Peter’s Church, St. Jacob’s Cathedral which houses the Seat of the Roman Catholic Church, The White Stone Palace, the Synagogue of Old Riga, the yard of the Convent of the Holy Spirit, the Dannenstern House, the complex of residential houses The Three Brothers, Riga Castle, and many others.
