Natto

To put it simply, natto is fermented soybeans. It looks unappetizing and smells even more so, but Japanese people swear by it. It is full of protein and usually served with rice. This sticky and smelly dish is extremely popular in Japan and very healthy, too. Also, it is one of the most-Japanese dishes out there, so you should definitely give it a try!

Tempura

Tempura is the name of a very popular Japanese dish, and it can be found in almost any restaurant in the country. So what is it, actually? Pieces of sea food or vegetables covered in batter and deep fried. Delicious! It can be served as a side dish, main dish, or as a topping for some other traditional dishes such as udon and soba.

Okonomiyaki

If you order Okonomiyaki and get pizza, do not complain. It is not a pizza, it just looks like one. Okonomiyaki is actually a savory pancake covered with all kinds of toppings. The toppings and the size of this dish vary greatly from region to region. Also, as the toppings vary, so do their names: if you want an okonomiyaki with fried noodles on top, you should order modan-yaki. Negiyaki is a thinner version of okonomiyaki topped with scallions.
