This week we visit: Greece
Greece is definitely one of the top tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and in Europe in general, offering everything to the traveler – from its bustling capital Athens to tiny villages surrounded by oceans of olive trees; from quiet and almost mystical monasteries to islands with the craziest nightlife you can imagine; from sandy beaches to snow-covered mountains. Greece really has it all.
Unless you arrive by sea, you will most likely be landing in Athens, Greek capital and a very special city. The city features some of the most important archaeological sites in the world but it is also a modern city full of life. Sometimes almost too full.
If you are interested in Ancient Greece, one location that you simply have to see is the Delphi. It is the location of the famed ancient Oracle, later replaced with a Temple of Apollo. Innumerable Greek myths include tales of this place and the most staggering thing is that there are plenty of structures still standing, more or less preserved.
While Mount Athos may be more important for Greek Orthodox population, the Meteora is definitely the more breath-taking monastery complex. Located in central Greece, this complex is famous for the monasteries that look as if they were put down on rock pillars from above. They offer a sight that you will not experience anywhere else in the world.
Greek Islands are among the most beautiful in the world, with more than 2,000 individual islands attracting visitors from all over the globe. Some of the most famous are Crete (also the biggest), Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos and they all offer something different. Plan on spending at least a week jumping from island to island. And that will only be scratching the surface.
