This week we visit: Nepal

Nepal is a country of many cultures and traditions and also one that has been visited by travelers from all over the world during the course of its history. It is therefore no surprise that Nepalese cuisine is so rich and delicious. The following are just some of the Nepalese traditional dishes you will fall in love with.

Dal-Bhat is the national dish of Nepal. It is eaten at least once a day in pretty much every Nepalese household and you can get it anywhere you turn. Dal stands for lentils and bhat stands for rice. However, it is not just about lentils and rice. You will also find vegetable curries, pickles and chicken or mutton meat as part of the dish.

Momo is the Nepalese version of dumplings that are eaten throughout Asia. In Nepal, momos are filled with chicken or buffalo meat, steamed and then eaten with pickles. There are other types of momo to be had these days, including the cheese, vegetarian and pork momos.

Chatamari is best described as a cross between a crepe and a pizza, only made with rice flour. It is a savory dish, topped with minced meat, vegetables and egg. A “Nepalese pizza”, it is truly a dish you have to try. If you are hankering for something sweet, then make sure to try the sel roti, a treat that most resembles donuts, only made from rice flour and deep friend in butter. Finally, make sure not to miss out on some delicious yak cheese.
