This week we visit: Romania
There’s no need to worry; Romania is one of the safest countries in Europe. Violent crime is rare and almost always happens between rival gangs who are fighting for territory in the most dangerous areas of Bucharest and other big cities.
Some areas in major cities are considered unsafe and even though you will probably have no problems visiting those areas, it might be best to stay away from those parts which are dangerous.
Tourist should, however, be aware that pickpocketing and bag-snatching are frequent, especially in crowded places. Always watch your bag, money and other valuables in busy clubs, bars, and on crowded buses or trains. Also, you should be cautious when visiting popular tourist destinations.
There have been reports of valuables being stolen from hotel rooms, so we advise you to use the hotel safe and carry a photocopy of the information pages of your passport as ID. Moreover, credit or debit cards have been copied and used for payment in some bars and restaurants.
When it comes to taxis, people often complain how taxi drivers tend to overcharge foreign visitors. Have in mind that yellow cabs should always list prices on the side of the vehicle and display a company name.
