This week we visit: Greece
If you know what to do and where to look, Greece will offer a gastronomic feast in more than one sense of the word. However, as you will mostly be visiting tourist destinations, you need to be careful and avoid spots where you will get average or even below-average food.
One of the first things to remember is that restaurants which offer a bit of everything usually don’t do anything particularly well. You know these places – they offer Greek specialties but also pizza, burgers and pasta. Stick to places that do one thing.
Also, when you are in particularly touristy areas (meaning tavernas packed tight, live music and everything) it is a good idea to stick with traditional dishes that are easily made – such as the Greek salad, Fava, Horta, grilled fish, Lathera and stewed meat. One dish you should always avoid in these places is moussaka. Moussaka is a difficult dish to prepare properly and these places usually do not have the time or the ingredients to make great moussaka.
Furthermore, when in Greece, always go for Greek desserts. There is really no point in going for cheesecake or chocolate cake when you can have Greek yogurt with preserves or honey, walnut cake, Greek donuts, kaimaki or mastiha ice cream.
Finally, check out a few Greek sites that recommend places to eat. It is very difficult to find truly great and authentic Greek restaurants if you limit yourself to websites that are in English. With a bit of help from Google Translate, check out websites like fnl-guide.com or athinorama.gr.
